Underserved New Yorkers Facing Cancer Benefit from New York Community Trust Grant to CancerCare

February 14, 2012

Underserved residents of New York City and their families who are facing cancer can continue to receive free, professional support services from CancerCare to help them cope with the emotional and practical concerns arising from a cancer diagnosis, thanks to a generous grant from the New York Community Trust.

CancerCare has been awarded an $800,000 grant to provide financial assistance and education to underserved New Yorkers by the Trust, a community foundation supporting charities in the New York metropolitan area. Our organization has received the highest grant amount of any of the 46 organizations the Trust has funded so far this year.

“We’re very grateful for the support we’ve received from The New York Community Trust,” says CancerCare CEO Helen H. Miller, LCSW, ACSW. “Especially in these difficult economic times, the Trust’s generosity ensures that we can continue to meet the growing need for assistance across New York City.”

The New York Community Trust has provided grants to CancerCare since 1987, and has donated more than $15 million in support of our free, professional services for people affected by cancer.

Grants totaling $5 million were approved by the Trust so far this year to support organizations that address issues that affect underserved New Yorkers, including health care, education, community development, affordable housing, and environmental cleanup.

Get Help Managing Cancer-Related Pain

February 6, 2012

A new study found that many patients coping with cancer reported better managing their cancer-related pain after receiving emotional and/or practical support. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, also found that education about pain management helped patients learn to better control their pain.

Read more about the study.

Pain is a symptom of cancer and its treatments that can—and should—be controlled. CancerCare’s professional oncology social workers work with people coping with cancer to develop strategies for managing cancer-related pain. It is important for patients to discuss any pain they are experiencing with their health care team, which can include doctors, nurses, social workers, or pain specialists.

CancerCare provides pain-management information in our free publications, Controlling Cancer Pain: What You Need to Know to Get Relief, and “Opening the Door to Effective Pain Management.” Leading medical experts also addressed pain-management techniques during CancerCare’s Connect Education Workshop, “Coping with Cancer Pain: What You Need to Know.”

Support Our Free Services by Donating to the CancerCare Thrift Shop

February 2, 2012

Looking for a way to support CancerCare‘s professional support services for people affected by cancer? Please consider a donation to CancerCare‘s Thrift Shop, located at 1480 Third Avenue (between 83rd and 84th Streets) in New York City. Art, jewelry, furniture, china, crystal, and new or gently worn clothing and accessories are especially welcome.

The shop’s Director of Retail Operations, Caroline McKinnon, also encourages donors to remember CancerCare when they are managing an estate, and that all contributions are tax-deductible.

Kristin Bergfeld, who runs an estate service helping families, recently helped a family find a meaningful way to donate items that belonged to their mother:

“A recent client of my company, whose life was tragically ended by cancer, was a professional woman who loved high fashion, especially Yves St. Laurent. When we began work to clear her apartment, I saw that she had a bookshelf in her living room filled with books and articles about cancer, and information about support groups.

When I saw this bookshelf, I immediately thought of CancerCare and its thrift shop.  By donating dozens of her designer clothes and accessories, including shoes, handbags, scarves, and Yves St. Laurent blouses, dresses, jackets, and gowns, her estate helped support CancerCare’s free services for cancer patients and their loved ones.”
