Popular New York Caterer Supports CancerCare Bake Sale to Benefit Kids’ Program

September 23, 2010

Dozens of busy executives were spotted cradling cupcakes in their hands while rushing off to business meetings and appointments this afternoon in the lobby of CancerCare‘s New York City headquarters. The cause of this flurry of frosting was a bake sale held by CancerCare that raised nearly $300 to support our CancerCare for Kids program.

Team CancerCare L to R: Kyle Hornyak, Monica Cavazos Mendez, and Lindsay Osborn

The delicious and lavishly decorated cupcakes were generously catered by David Ziff Cooking, Inc.

The bake sale was part of our ongoing Cupcakes for a Cause fundraiser benefiting CancerCare for Kids, a specialized program that provides free, professional support services designed to help children and parents deal with the emotional and practical concerns of a cancer diagnosis, whether it’s the child’s, the parent’s or that of another family member.

You can support this vital program by hosting a bake sale of your own. It’s easy– simply download a free, easy to use toolkit from our website to get started.

You can also visit a participating bakery and purchase a cupcake this week, with proceeds from the purchase benefiting CancerCare for Kids. We’ll even help you find a participating bakery near you.

Men Affected by Cancer Connect Through Support Group

September 21, 2010

This September, CancerCare launched a new, professionally led support group in New York City for men, focusing on “Sexual Health After Cancer.” The group, led by CancerCare Men’s Cancers Program Director Bill Goeren, LCSW-R, ACSW, brought together 20 participants, who shared their concerns and insights about intimacy and sexual health during and after cancer treatment.

While the majority of participants were prostate cancer survivors, the group also included men diagnosed with myeloma, head and neck cancer, colon cancer, and throat cancer.

Though their experiences were unique, a common thread binding the men in the group was their anxiety and uncertainty about the impact of their cancer and treatment on their sexuality, noted Goeren.

“Men can often be hesitant to discuss their emotions and feelings,” he said.  “Once the ice was broken, though, the group really opened up and asked the questions they wanted to ask,” such as whether they would be able to continue or resume physical intimacy with their partner. The men also shared how they were affected emotionally by the temporary or permanent loss of sexual function due to their illness and treatment, and how that loss redefined their intimate relationships.

CancerCare will offer its professionally moderated men’s cancers support group throughout the fall and winter. Future discussion topics will include exercise and nutrition, work and careers, and how to talk to your children about cancer.

For more information about CancerCare’s programs for men affected by cancer, contact Goeren at 212-712-6141 or email wgoeren@cancercare.org.

Making More Informed Treatment Decisions Focus of Summit

September 17, 2010

Bill McGivney, PhD, CEO of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), discussed the role of comparative effectiveness research (CER) in helping consumers, clinicians, policy makers and insurance companies make informed decisions about treatment and drug coverage, during a one-day oncology advocacy summit, hosted in Alexandria, VA earlier this week by Cephalon.

The summit, “Giving a Voice to People Living with Blood Cancers,” brought together representatives of community oncology centers and cancer support and advocacy organizations, including CancerCare, to discuss policy strategies and awareness building about CER.

CER differs from the clinical trials process in that it doesn’t focus on finding out whether particular treatments are effective. Instead, it focuses on the benefits that treatments are actually producing in routine clinical practice. It strives to answer the questions of what treatments work best, for whom, and in which situations.

NCCN, known for developing the Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology relied on by physicians and patients around the world has in recent years taken the lead in bringing together experts to determine the best way to apply CER in oncology. Cephalon is the maker of drugs for leukemia and pain managment.

Financial Help for Cancer Patients Lessens Out-of-Pocket Treatment Costs

September 14, 2010

Health care providers should open up the conversation with their patients about resources that can help ease the burden of costly insurance co-payments for their cancer treatments, advises CancerCare CEO Helen H. Miller in the latest issue of Oncology Nurse Advisor magazine.

Many patients may hesitate to discuss financial matters with their health care team, Miller notes, even though their ability to cover  medical costs is key to complying with their treatment

Miller advises oncology nurses and other health care providers to talk openly with their patients about financial resources that might benefit them. The CancerCare Co-Payment Assistance Foundation, for example, provides qualified individuals with up to $10,000 per year in co-payment assistance for certain cancer diagnoses and treatments. The Cancer Financial Assistance Coalition (CFAC) is a searchable database that directs patients to other sources of financial assistance, locally and nationally.
